I don't think It's controversial. I also think that old guy might actually not be that bad. Like the people around him were horrible but he himself isn't but he just let him be because of how old people tend to keep the status quo.
I think the author might go to the route where he redeems himself and help make the mc even stronger. Then he dies in a season finale lol.
I hope the mc and that old guy just be comrades, unfortunately that old man has pests as subordinates. I think him and the mc are bound to clash or have an all out fight one day.
