BL has cool female characters, too, infact magnitudes more charismatic, much more real than shoujo ones. But they still feel just as superficial as shoujo cool girls but for a different reason. While shoujo cool girls often fail to hit the mark because you can't help but see them as only a vessel that exists to carry out the reader's romantic fantasies, the BL cool girls feel like they're deliberately being written as cool and "masculine" only to communicate to the reader that they are not potential romantic interests or rivals. They are also just a vessel that is carrying out their fujoshi readers' long standing desire to serve as the hand of God in stories pushing two male characters that they ship together into a romantic relationship with each other.

You should read more shounen and related genres for that. The greatest female characters I've found exist in shounen and seinen. When female characters in male-centric stories are based on the archetype of woman as someone a man would want to date, they come out as characters that disappoint anyone who cares for women more than they like them. But, when female characters are based on the archetype of a woman as someone a man is most closely related to, as someone that a man inherits from and bequeathes to, a mother-figure, a sister-figure or a daughter-figure, you get some of the realest, most respectful and the coolest female characterizations ever. I'll use Naruto for an analogy since that is to MMM-sphere kind of like the Bible is to the real world. Everyone knows some stories from the Bible, has some idea about the characters, even if they have never even looked at a single page of the book. That way I can be assured that most people will get my analogy. With shounen, you'll have to sit through scores of Sakuras (the girlfriend/wife), but you'll also be rewarded with so many Hinatas (the daughter), Inos, Temaris (the sister) and Tsunades (the mother).
