The dresses are actually something noble women in the 1800-ish wore during pregnancy. Because they can't use corsets while expecting. So maybe that's why. The patters aren't ugly is just that the silloute of the dresses aren't flattering to Navier figure.
you're correct tho will mention there were pregnancy corsets! the layers needed to hold a dress need the structure of a corset so up until very late in pregnancy they had corsets designed to stretch and hold the belly.
