This is probably one of my favorite set of side stories out so many BL manhwa I’ve read. A lot of side stories for darker more toxic relationships like this are just more time the main couple and like a mini plot that isn’t too consequential (which I do love), but this feels like a true expansion of both characters and how they would react in a relationship like this. Especially because I feel like the main story was relatively short compared to both the potential it could have had and to other stories like Passion or Codename Anastasia which are currently ongoing and already exceed/meet the same chapter count as Roses and Champagne’s main story. It feels natural and almost like an actual second season or sequel rather than most side stories.
To also center these stories around Caesar’s and Leewon’s different expectations for their relationship and how they begin to understand the other’s perspective instead of focusing only on external obstacles (like Dmitri and Mikhail) was brilliant. Upon my recent rereading of the main story, I felt like the whole development of their relationship was a bit rushed and while they loved each other, they didn’t love the whole of each other, since the never knew it. With the nature of their characters, their reactions to each others actions and words feel completely natural. With this recent chapter, I feel like Leewon is starting to fully embrace all of Caesar and while I don’t think Caesar is as ready for that without some sort of possessiveness/jealousy popping up, it is his first love and he’s a mafioso with heaps of trauma, so we might need to cut him some slack with his pace. That being said, I’m really looking forward to the next chapter!
