Definitely. Being bruised all the time not only made her "ugly", but also made her be viewed as not human, something they could kick around and it wouldn't make a fuss.

i feel like it’s both to be honest. like, yeah she was always covered in bruises but i wouldn’t straight out say her freckles isn’t apart of it since considering the time period freckles were definitely seen as unattractive
No they're not calling her ugly because of her face, they're calling her ugly because she's always filled with bruises head to toe. Her being called ugly feels more like a metaphor tbh. As if people around her were trying hide their hopelessness and ugliness inside their heart by projecting it onto someone weaker than them.
