Asada Nemui is hit or miss for me personally. Definitely not the author to go to if you like morally uncomplicated mcs. I think whether I end up loving or hating this one is going to depend heavily on how the story ends.
Do you think books like A Song of Ice and Fire are automatically trash because GRRM writes about gore and rape happening to its characters? Depiction of extreme violence and assault in a story isn’t endorsement. The story is about men that act as violent and abusive as real life men, and explores how men with power can perform that violence on each other if society had a/b/o. Nobody reading this thinks Takatora is a good man — he’s prejudiced against his own class and thinks he is above his own peers. But he’s interesting BECAUSE of his flaws and how he thinks all he has to do is girlboss his way to the top to be considered an alpha in all but name (and it fails, because he STILL gets looked down on and assaulted).
It's not as if the MC is supposed to be likeable. He is literally the personification of quite a *few* bad stereotypes. No one here is clapping for him whenever he acts like an ass, because everyone recognizes that the shit he does is bad.
Like the other comment said: depiction of violence, assault, discrimination, and whatever other questionable conduct does NOT equal endorsement or romantization of said conduct.
If you don't like to read stories with social commentary that builds off the bad stuff and, by proxy, the bad people, then this simply isn't for you. You're not on some moral high ground just bc you can't find flawed characters interesting, tho
Well, if you aren't even open to reading the rest of the chapters, then what I can do? It's not like I can force you to like something that you weren't even interested in. And it's fine too. You are entitled to your thoughts.
But I will let you know that Asada san is one of the best mangaka. They deal with topics that are considered dark and taboo so beautifully, and the best thing is that they don't romantize anything. And yes, Asada san's characters are always somewhat morally grey. If you aren't comfortable with such things and topics, then clearly, you aren't their audience in the first place.
