It's not fake concern, it's just concern born out of guilt. He's the reason the real one disappeared and he regret their last encounter. So truly he's more concerned about his own peace of mind rather than the original mc but still...
It's self-centered and misplaced but it isn't fake. He is truly concerned that he'll have to live with his mistake for the rest of his life if the real one doesn't come back.
