She is what I like about the story and what kind of puts it apart from generic wattpad-ness.

I do agree on that point, because it's not generally explored how relationships can dissolve and turn something once precious to dirt. And she stays because she clings to that memory of what it once was. Emotional abuse- something incredibly prevalent but not talked about enough.

The thing is, though, that the realism she brings kind of gets...offput by the male lead imo. I want her to find happiness but he kinda ruins it because he is the wattpad/manhwa stereotype.

I like obsessed men but that is quite literally his only personality. Everything he does is for her. Everytime he breathes it's for her. He is a tall dark stranger who came out of seemingly nowhere just waiting for her relationship to fall apart lol. Not to mention he is a CEO AND the quasi-leader of the mafia world? that’s a fair point about the ml. i see where you’re coming from, however don’t agree with him being empty as a whole mainly because when stories have the bad boy ceo/mafia chad ml, his faults usually lie in being emotionally void or sometimes even cold to the fl before being kind. with wattpad they’re never initially so open with their feelings and quick to do acts of service until the fl has benefited him in some way. while i get nice ceos who chase + have trauma are common place for manhwas, with wattpad the personality is just being a bad boy alone not the no-strings-attached devotion. i should’ve specified while this uses the korean media stereotype of the ceo/bad boy trope, i don’t believe it aligns with wattpad or popularized western version because their own take on it is to make him… purposefully flat? for that app, the ml upholds the traits of a bad boy, by being mean or careless initially, and only becomes kind in his attempt to use her or keep her from leaving. with this story, his only personality isn’t just being a mysterious traumatized tsundere until the very end, his acts of service haven’t been given room for explanation

ml’s devotion comes from a place that deeply changed him and not some cosmic attraction that suddenly got thrown into our lap. this itself is very manhwa-esque, throwing in the whole “we met in the past and i wish to help you now”. he hasnt been given depth yet because the story needed to focus on mc and her perspective with mincheol. i feel like seeing his side first or past this early would’ve thrown us off with all the stuff she has gone through and needs to work out. imo he’s not given the perfect ceo stereotype because he is manipulative and calculating. his kindness is self serving, yet also an act of gratitude- his intention is to be worlds better than the ex while still being authentic to his feelings. to summarize, i do agree his only personality at the moment is being good to her BUT it’s due to our main character being focused on. not because the story aims to make his characterization one dimensional the entire story

Tbh, I have not read much Wattpad. I only know it from seeing jokes about it or reading fanfiction, so my experience with original content is very limited in that regard. I was pretty much conflating Wattpad with manhwas because of the whole normal girl + bad boy gangster thing. I've never had much patience for guys who don't treat their partner right so if that's what most what pad fics are like I'm glad I avoided that lol.

On the perspective thing I kind of disagree. Most Korean(and Chinese) romance stories follow the same formula. She's a normal girl and he loves her for whatever reason. 9/10 they met when one was a kid lol. And in these stories most of them do not get much development. Sure maybe some trauma, a little bit of family drama sprinkled in, a dash of a major accident, but it all ultimately just serves to make the fl stand out more by being the one to save him from it. The "I can fix him" stereotype. I will be incredibly glad if you are right and I just miss read but so many manhwas have the guy just being this generic cold no personality dude who is only there to look good and make the self insert reader fantasize. They aren't allowed to have any actual flaws. Nothing sets them apart.

And it's fine cause I don't usually read stories for the male lead, I like reading about badass women and men being in fantastical situations, wish fulfillment and all that. But in the moments I want to read a story about a character genuinely worse off than me getting better, I want it to be realistic and well paced. Kind of like lookism(character development there was a+). She delivers well enough on that front, but him being the culmination of just so many tropes wrecks the experience for me.

And on the manhwa thing, maybe I'm just a brainless reader(which tbf I kinda am when I read romance, it's just fluffy nonsense) but I genuinely cannot remember a single romance Korean manhwa I liked where the male lead stood out to me in any particular way. Sure I remember SOME male leads, but they're mostly in my head cause I liked the story as a whole, not because of them.

Meanwhile, for mangas I remember son han from Akatsuki no Yona, or lan wangji from the Chinese novel/manhua modaozushi.

Despite lan wangji also being a cold, good at sex virgin ceo(? Ish) equivalent. And the only thing I can point towards is that despite that, he still had substance behind him because they both have motivations and ideals and people they care about outside of their romantic interest- who they are both obsessed with and treat incredibly well-. They don't become nothing once you take their lover out of the equation. That's something hard to see in most manhwas, so I kind of find it hard to believe this ml will be different(ESPECIALLY with the art dear God im sorry for always going back to that it just hurts my eyes) but it would honestly be cool if he did have more motivations than her. Or even more surprisingly, another person he genuinely cares about low low bar for these friendless losers lmfao

and yea the experience with wattpad is way different with manhwas. it’s been years since ive went back but this trope is done with the same style as any colleen hoover romance lmao. the standards of writing are lower on wattpad because its mainly a younger fanbase writing fanfiction for younger audiences. is there better stories? of course! but the main thing it’s known for is creating flat characters because its a beginner friendly space for writers. so the bad boy/ceo tropes always start off toxic, not wholesome like most mainstream straight manhwas. and his entire character is dressed up in the surface level traits

and i do agree that they use the same formula of meeting when they were kids and then he finds her years later and chases her. the trauma is always a must too, all this is pretty much the standard for k-media romances . i don’t find it all surprising they used the same trope, but what i find enjoyable is that it’s not forced due to initial attraction. he most likely fell in love with her heart first, and she’s falling for him for the same reasons as well. the “cosmic attraction” i referred to is them having a soft spot for each other with no build up. in comparison, this story took time to show their bond growing stronger. imo, i do prefer stories where the ml is endlessly kind at first because seeing a man be mean to a girl for no reason pisses me off too i can’t do it LMAO. i genuinely think ml’s flaws lies in how secretive and calculating he is, and i really hope they can emphasize how his terrible background causes him to overcompensate in his (so far) one sided love with haesoo

i feel the same about reading stories for mostly the mcs, not the leads. if she isn’t given depth i literally cannot continue the story. tbr, i don’t mind if the male leads are treated as a one dimensional love interest if the fmc is able to carry the plot. i can’t remember any similar stories with ceo/bad boy tropes with good characterization at the moment because ive been reading more yaoi and isekai lately . but i do have other ml that stand out to me just in different settings! like the story olgami or the gyeongseong mermaid. i haven’t read lookism but the fl sounds great already

I LOVE HAN FROM AKATSUKI NO YONA. he’s hilarious and their banter/dynamic is perfect to me. that story is amazing and well developed, im gonna be devastated when it finishes. im not familiar with the other ml though from the chinese webtoon. ill pick that up because you made him sound so interesting and well rounded!

LMAO i also hate the art for this story and cannot stand how big they made them so uncanny. he’s oddly huge and small headed, while she’s as petite as a hair strand with the craziest curves . it doesn’t look to good on paper, but i do hope they get some other interests outside of each other (mainly about him). it looks like they’re building up a storyline where he’ll take over his fathers business in a hostile manner
