Currently there’s something called a ‘partnership certification’ in Japan which can help same sex couples with housing, bills, hospital care, however, there’s no legal obligation for landlords or hospitals to honour this certification (unlike a marriage certificate). It is also illegal for same sex couples to adopt. The liberal democratic party of Japan also has been against same-sex marriage since they’ve been consistently in power since 1958 and it doesn’t look like they’ll be out of power anytime soon.
I’m not sure how much Japan’s laws on same-sex marriage have changed, but I’d rather stay in Mexico, the U.S., Canada, or England than live in Japan with my partner.
But all in all I liked the story.
