    I think it’s partly cause she knows homophobia still exists. She doesn’t want her baby boy to deal with that.

    'still exists' isn't the right words, they basically live in a homophobic place. Asia esp korea isn't the kindest place for same sex relationship.

    In the story, her daughter states it’s all over the internet and you see it often enough so obviously for the sake of the story, it’s less cruel than reality. I am very well aware of homophobia being present in Asian communities. I myself am from an African community so I know all about homophobic cultures so I wouldn’t ever make light of something I have faced with my own community. The story itself minimises the amount of homophobia. Probably for the sake of romance and making it palatable to the reader.
