I’ll start from where the arc does.
Devran, one of the recruits to the legion doesn’t return from his holiday visiting his home town ‘Hartan’ to see his family (his sister is most important to the story here). When the group set off on the way to his hometown to find him, they bring Jimmy because he’s a local and might have information about the area. It turns out his information is limited because he was sheltered by his parents from the attitude of fear and hatred towards the awakened prevalent in the eastern region. What he does know is that there are mysterious bandits on route.

The bandits turn out to be a group of awakeners who’ve found each other independently of the legion and have turned to crime for money. This particular small group is lead by Nahan, the man with the burn scar who has the power of illusion. One of the members of the awakened bandit group has also gone missing in Hartan and Nahan needs help finding him, so he proposes that Yuder & the legion group make a temporary alliance to find out what the situation is in town.

Nahan also fills them in on some strange events; A fire has broken out in the town which Devran has been framed for (his awakened ability is fire based). This fire killed the first in line heir to the feudal lordship. With the other 2 heirs to the position, one of them is the actual culprit and the other has not said anything, but doesn’t appear to be dead.

Coincidentally Kiolle de Diarca (who is the Duke of the East’s youngest son) was sent to the mountains in the area for training. Kishiar has spies who inform him about this so he knows that the feudal lord is not reporting the events and that Kiolle is in the area, but not what is going on with Yuder’s group so far. Duke Diarca himself has a lot of power in the area and we can see he’s been manipulating nobles and public opinion behind the scenes, including requesting the mages of the pearl tower to find out about the red stone in an attempt to get either the stone or information on it, but there’s no concrete proof connecting him to anything.

I can give slightly more info to clarify things a little based on the novel if you want it but I’d need to tag spoilers if you do
