Back during those times people would do something more like a sponsored adoption so any age was possible if I'm not wrong, I think they couldn't be older than you that was like the only thing you would pay for their tuition and they would spread the word of ur good deed it was like an extension of the main family line (which is what I think the author is relying on) but I could be wrong I read about this in an old article
