Pretty sure he comes back later to help Nerys plot politically. He's the pope's brother or something, and he's been keeping his head down so he doesnt get killed for political power reasons. Anyway eventually he'll fight for power and become an ally for Nerys.
So…what was even the point of the pink haired 2nd ML if he was just going to be completely stopped. He was basically a one-off side character
