Honestly, if this is an official English translation, I think the author’s view of gender is pretty thoughtful and nuanced. Despite consistently using the word “dad” for Shizuku, the author and every character uses feminine pronouns and her chosen name in every scenario so far. To me, this signals that Shizuku is meant to be a genuine portrayal of a trans woman, or at least someone genderqueer who pretty much always presents fem. While she’s not a big enough character to really get into her thoughts and feelings, I feel like the story has treated her quite respectfully. Also, while this is likely not intentional, I get the really strong feeling that Hanae is also somewhere on the genderqueer spectrum, as he doesn’t really seem to think of being Hana as “cross dressing,” and more like another side to him that just so happens to be a woman. I’m probably looking way too far into it, but I’d like to give the author a little credit for not making the same tired, insensitive jokes that a lot of other “crossdressing” series seem to rely on for shock value.
