Gotta admit this is one of my least favorite tropes. Oscar said he was comfortable and found his own support system with no need for his father. Yet Freya still insists on trying to connect with a person who spent years hurting someone she loves just because he’s “family” and she thinks Oscar is still hurt. Which he should be, his father who was supposed to protect and love him selfishly only focused on himself and his feelings during and after one of the most traumatic moments of their lives like Oscar wasn’t also hurt. No doubt the author is having her do this just to show off how nice and caring she is just wanting the whole family to get together again.

But I can’t help but see it as anything but her being ignorant which she shouldn’t be since she herself came from an abusive situation Oscar’s is just a different form of abuse rather than verbal and emotional it’s negligence. I see this a lot in manga, forgiving those who hurt characters extensively just because they happen to share some blood. But 2 things can be true at once you can love someone and still be hurt by them, you don’t necessarily have to forgive them for that just because you love them.

I agree with you. Like I get what’s she’s trying to do but she’s also not listening to him. Which is why he told her “you’re gonna get hurt”. Now do I believe the author will make it so that her meddling will change something, of course. But for once I wish it doesn’t go that route, that way the FL will understand. Is that wrong of me to think that way?

I love your take and it makes so much sense like QAQ wdym all those years you did nothing and some girl who’s the mc comes along and everything gets solved

I think trope started off as something like MC trying to repay their Love Interest for all the good things that has happened to them. And something like a "I can fix him/her" spice

But yeah I agree that I just wish they would stop meddling and accidentally retraumatizing their partners. Listen and respect their boundaries when they say they don't want anything to do with their abusers.

That's exactly what I thought when she wanted to connect with his father. It kinda reminded me of a reddit story about the girl connecting with his bf's Mom even though he explained that he doesn't want to.

Honestly I would have understood this trope if the father had neglected his son in his childhood cuz he was too deep in his widowed grief, but now wanted to reconcile but didn't know how to, then i would have somewhat gotten behind this. But the father seems so uninterested in his own son even now. But as the story is progressing, it's kinda obvious that ml and father will reconcile with the help of fl. It leaves a bad taste in my mouth that he is going to be forgiven after everything he made the ml go through. It's so unfair.

Right. The father shouldn’t be forgiven so easily after causing so much trauma to his son. Why should he be able to get redemption when the son has completely given up and doesn’t want to.

They both have decades of trauma to undo. Thankfully the thing is Oscar had the servants and maids that worried and cared for him. So he grew up to be more mature, more bright and confident. He knows his worth. Remember that Freya is 10 years younger, she never had the support he did until NOW and she has to unlearn all this PEOPLE PLEASING behavior after all the mental, verbal, financial and physical abuse she went through. I feel like she desperately wants to have a family hence why she wanted to try and mend the bridge between Oscar and his father. It's ignorant for sure. But I understand where she's coming from because Oscar's father was negligent but it's because he let his grief consume him. She's a really empathetic, naive and young. He's not an inherently complete villain. NOW AS FOR FREYA'S FAMILY WTF?? Villain only ahh family. But anyway we'll see where this goes... The only one who's able to accept an apology for his father's neglect is him. Not even Freya can do anything about their relationship if things just don't click. I, for one, believe that they could POSSIBLY have an amicable relationship. Especially with Freya now in the picture since Oscar is no longer alone. And because despite his father being neglectful he left mostly emotional scars. I'm very glad he wasn't physically abusive or anything!

I also don't like this troupe but after seeing how his dad interacts with the female lead, my opinion changed a little. It looks to me like depression completely consumes him that he feels indifferent about everything. Yet he still isn't a complete jerk and is willing to listen, like she said. Not that I'm excusing him neglecting his own child but... I'm just saying I can see he's lifeless from depression and grief.

Yes, but the fact that the FL is the one that pulls him out of it is what's getting me. Like why was your child not enough? Why is it this random ass girl you just met? Idk if I'm phrasing it right but that's my biggest issue. He's been like this for years and all it takes is a bit of talk-no-jutsu from Freya and suddenly he cares again.

I'm saying I share the same issue as you, but I'm a little more accepting now because of the execution. ML doesn't notice the things FL notices about his dad because ML doesn't think his dad will change. But Freya is able to catch the little details and is hopeful about it since the dad isn't completely brain ded like her family.

But yea, it's gonna be the cliche "you remind me of my wife" kinda route. I wish his own child is enough but as I said previously, he's blinded by his own grief and depression and feels indifference about everything. It doesn't help that ML doesn't know how to convey or deal with his emotions either when he tried to get his dad's attention. The dad will probably change slowly the more he interacts with FL.
