Good thing he has regenerative abilities (which is also why the gods couldn’t kill him), so he survived and turned into these possessive vines that are always with Huan Huan, either on her wrist or neck.

Add that to his deep feelings for her and his desire to atone for his past mistakes... yeah, he went all in.
