First time I read this scene in novel I was like "WHY DON'T YOU JUST CALL FOR HELP OR GO HOSPITAL INSTEAD OF WASTING TIME" but then I realised. He knows he has a weak heart and poor body condition. He knows that if his fragile heart stops once, he can not survive from a surgery. Seeing your beloved last time kinda dramatic and cliche but... I'd do the same if i were in his shoe.

Also you can't expect someone who is terrified and injured to make the right choices there. At least he called for the ambulance :D
