Im guessing that the world has always been that way, and he only now noticed. This is kinda implied in the first chapter and the chapter where Hatano confesses to the mc.
mc raised a flag when he was a kid, which caused Hatano to have feelings for him, and since mc was young, he wouldn't have known about the "truth" about the world around him. Now that he's an adult, he's trying his best not to become like the rest of the population bc he knows more than he did before

Apparently the world has always been like that and he only noticed after high school. But there's also an extra comic the author drew for the physical version of the manga volumes sold in specific stores where the main character realizes he has no memory previous to finding out he lived in a bl world (might be the reason why he doesn't remember hatano) so there might be something supernatural going on
