The main character is a walking red flag. I think the main reason why he gave me so much cringe was because he has this HUGE unresolved abandonment issues with his parents and tries to compensate for this by unloading all his emotional demands on his girlfriend. While the manga tries to problematize this a bit, I feel that it does not get developed enough.
The boy is young. I think he's no older than 16, and throughout the series, he opens up a bit. But emotionally stunted kids and a super-innocent young girl are not a good combination. Of course, it's something they'll discover over time and as their relationship develops, but having to respond to such emotional demands is suffocating and super manipulative.
Some of this can be seen (SPOILER ALERT) when Hotaru-chan takes Yao's brothers to the hospital, and Hananoi-kun makes her feel bad for choosing them over him when he wasn't feeling well. And poor Hotaru suffers and suffers because obviously, we can't always be there for the people we love, but really? I can't stand the boy.
Sometimes it makes me really angry watching this series because it creates this atmosphere where you have to kind of walk on eggshells trying not to trigger his anxieties, and of course, this is not healthy and this is not good for either of them, it's really toxic.
