The story doesn't try to justify his abuse, he literally realizes that his perception of her was wrong.
I feel like this comments section has trouble understanding the concept of multiple, separate, but linked issues that are not being brought forward to counter one another. It's just depth.
The story brings the abuse up in all its ugly shades and leaves it as is. It just then fills out the characters and you're looking at that like it's meant to justify the abuse...
Annette having been insensitive towards his trauma does not "justify the abuse", it's just a separate fact. She looked someone who went through what he did in the eye, the man himself, and was like "your friends did well dying for the country tehe" with a smile on her face. People are justified in hating on her for that. No one is saying that she should've somehow known what he was going through, but the fumble itself is the issue. Then there's that she never tried to find out anything about him. Another separate issue, though linked in that it's connected to his mental health and would've impacted everything else.

In real life, odds are he wouldn't actually be in love with her, he'd just be a piece of shit. But this is fiction, so the story is that they're both actually in love with each other, even despite what happened.
Right now they've separated and it looks like, because she still loves him, she's willing to write to him and that will probably lead to a healthy relationship later.
your trauma doesn’t give you an excuse to abuse someone, let alone ur partner. that just makes you an abusive person. in some ways i wish she died, and he would’ve been crushed by the regret for the rest of his miserable life. he prolly would’ve killed himself too, but damn ig karma is a bitch. ignorance is a sin when it is intentional, being raised/groomed to be a doll isn’t her fault, its not her fault that NO ONE told her anything/blocked her from finding out.. and yet the entire country holds her families actions over her head. children are malleable, humans are malleable, we are the result of our life experiences and our social circles.. she is a victim.
a victim of pride, of greed, and of ignorance. i can’t fucking believe they end up together.
LEMME ALSO SAY THIS- obvs the ML has PTSD, and sought to blame the FL for his problems because it’s way easier to blame someone than it is to work on ur own problems.. BUT AGAIN, PTSD ISNT A FREE PASS FOR ABUSE.
