I mean, I have always felt that dynamics between two men were more of an equal standing type of relationship in manga. Whereas men would demand, looks down on and not treasure women (from shoujo to josei). The tides are changing.

Your theory is actually the man reason why I started reading BL to begin with the first BL I read had the healthiest communication and relationship I'd ever seen and I was hook since but nowadays I steer clear of it because of the explosive TOXIC AND DEFINITE CRIMINAL BASED plots that is becoming main stream.....ITS A TRIGGER AND ICK FOR ME. So shounen ai was my next station and josei is now becoming more mature and healthy so I'm settled with the current times. Hope it continues but they start implementing more FANTASY BASED mature and healthy themes. That would be hella cool fr.

I don’t think so tbh, a lot of ppl who read BL, just read it bc it’s BL. A lot of BL are toxic and full of r@pe but there are good ones too ofc, mainly the popular ones are heavily toxic. Idk but from what I remember the first BL was shota or something, someone can correct me if I’m wrong but BL has always romanticized toxic categories. It’s not that shoujo doesnt have good stories, it’s that they only read BL and a huge amount of ppl in that community fetishize MLM.

The popular shoujo are kimi no toko or whatever it’s called, ao haru ride, and the girl who cross dress and is in a school club or the girl who fell in love with her fox thing whatever. All the male leads in those stories are decent ppl. I really don’t think it’s why shoujo has not been as popular, it’s still popular but the BL community are really loud and aggressive, plus they are always in your face but there is a portion of that community that is nice and likes to read healthy stories and reads shoujo too
