I think it’s because his niece texted him about some sort of ‘setback’ to basically see how he’d react to that, based on that she would see the kind of relationship her uncle and ml have. But he thought ml was talking about a set back to the niece. (I could be wrong tho?)
It's cuz his niece (the girl in the hotspring together with mc) has misunderstood the situation. She didn't know mc was dating her uncle, cuz mc told her her revenge plans of dating the apparent rich uncle of her ex's fiancé (now wife) so that he'd have to call her his aunt. (she told it during the concert they went to together)
So niece thought mc was wooing some other guy that wasn't her uncle (the male lead). And she's trying to help her uncle who she believes is interested in mc, get together with her.
Hence when mc seemed down when talking about the guy she's wooing (in reality it's cuz she's shocked from learning that the male lead is in fact not her ex's gf's uncle (it was the driver that was lol)) so the niece thinking "this is my uncle's time to shine!" sent him a message saying she had a setback with her partner. Not knowing mc's partner was the very uncle she's texting this to.
