The translation is right. it would sound weird and off if they translated it as it is. sometimes you need to rearrange the words, reword it entirely even so its more engaging to the readers but keeps the meaning overall the same. in retrospect the panel itself is already hinting at the shoe so the dialogue doesnt need to point that out exactly if the readers are paying attention
The new uploaded chapter shows that the dad was indeed referring to his son and not to Jay (as was wrongly translated in the previous uploaded chapter).
The last panel has a translation error, the dad actually says his son is dating sme (referring to the worn sneakers he got from that guy couple of chapters ago to look 'poor') (⊙…⊙ )
