basically what u said. i find it easier to stomach toxic/abusive and/or heavy stories when the leads are men, which creates a sense of distance so we can analyze the story and its themes without it triggering me (since i am not male). writing a male mc for a gay story as opposed to a female mc is more "freeing", so to speak, bc we are less constrained by rigid gender roles and expectations set by the patriarchy. writing a queer love story as opposed to a straight one also broadens the range of the type of love and relationships/dynamics that could develop in these stories. lastly, i like men so seeing men kiss each other is pretty hot. (ngl tho i do enjoy reading trashy dramatic yaois bc they're like popcorn reads)

I read for the same reasons you mentioned, that's why it confuses me to no end when people self insert into BL stories or when they obsess over who tops or bottoms and go as far as dropping anything that doesn't align with their idea of a top or bottom. I mean who cares? The whole point is that they're both men. Some people I feel treat the terms "seme" and "uke" like a gender binary where seme is a caricature of masculinity and uke is basically a flat shoujo protag with a dick. It takes all kinds I guess. I just find that confusing.
I have seen a lot of exhausting and repetitive discourse about reading bl vs any other type of comic on here and on twitter and am curious to hear what people think. I started reading bl when I was very young and ive read for a lot of different reasons, but when I read something realllllly good I remember that I love love love romance without typical gender dynamics because power, softness, longing etc don’t fall into the same tired roles. wo that you can really tell that charcters are soul bonding. idk. that's why I usually hate overly fem ass bottoms and idgaf tops but the hating is low-key fun too lol
