Wait can a wave that big close to shore happen like that?

Not necessarily that close but waves can be massive close to shore. Could also be a stray wave or whatever u call it. Usually one that’s bigger and stronger than any other one without it being visible until it hits. I’m rambling but the author originally didn’t care to make it all that realistic. It’s fiction after all
