Ooooh… ok but had he bullied or was the victim of the prince and his bullies? I can imagine trying to teach someone unwilling to learn and not having any power to discipline him. Maybe he realized the family is a sinking ship and wants to escape?

Hes probably timid. Hes afraid of his own sister and let alone how crappy his nephew is.
