man i just love this series a lot. i love how it's realistic, but still a very sweet series. the take it has on friendships and relationships is really refreshing. i love romance like anyone else, but I also think it's very important to actively maintain friendships. all relationships require work, even friendships. so it's really nice to actively see that in this manga alongside the romance.
and i know i like the romance between mitsumi and shima, but i like that they had a very realistic problem with their relationship despite how much they have feelings for each other. and i like that even though mitsumi is very kind, she does have realistic reactions to shima afterwards because as nice as she is, it's still awkward for her to be around him. and i like how their breakup motivated shima to address to himself what was bothering him so much. which was how he saw himself, saw others around him, and his relationship with himself. in turn, wanting to be a better person so he can confidently pursue a relationship with mitsumi again.
it's a surprisingly mature take on romance and they're in high school. and I do think the best way to describe this is mature. mitsumi is surprisingly mature and it's not about how responsible she is. her maturity was really shown when she broke up with shima. she still had feelings for him, but she also recognized that he was struggling and it ended up affecting their romantic relationship as well as their friendship. she didn't want to lose him as a friend, so she cut off their romantic one. i'm paraphrasing here, but it was a moment that was so amazing to me.
