Cmiiw but i don't think doram is a slave "his whole life" the thing is... He CAN read, i mean not only CAN read but UNDERSTAND it (remember when he met his professor and he said he already read one or two books). If you're familiar with korean history (yes ofc i know this is a fictional manhwa and not aligned 100% with the real history one) you'd know that even many commoners can't read let alone slave, that's why king sejeong at that time made hangeul system which is like a "simplification" of hanja/hanzi cause at that time korea is still under chinese's rule, all the books he read during his lectures, they were written in hanzi (which is for me myself is much more complicated than hangeul)
If i remember correctly, didn't he say it himself that his family is similar to that of a shaman or like devoted believer to some sacred creature or something(?) i think he at least had a little privilege to own books (=・ω・=)

Yea he was a slave after his family was murdered I think he was around 6 years old when his family was slaughtered that’s why he doesn’t know much and was only able to read two books. So he was a slave for most of his life but lived good around elementary age till his family were called traitors and killed.
I hate where this is going!! I don't like how mc is getting involved with that snake professor!! Mc is being completely dumb and naive.. when the ml already promised him that he will find his brother, whats the point of going behind his back and try to look for the brother through this snake professor!!? Im not liking this !!!!! And i can see that mc is sending special gifts to this professor which can be considered really vulgar if we think about the era they are in, mc is the spouse of the king, who on earth will take this positively!!!? People will say mc and professor are involved in an affair if anything goes wrong!!!!
