No one is asking you to feel sorry for Ray. To be fair, all of them suck on their very OWN WAY! I saw your comment and reply to other people. Obviously, you are hating a character without even making a sense of why. As much as you hate a character who is obviously fucked up because of another twisted character (and you do not even hate that character, you just hate Ray), it shows that it's not the "attitude" or "actions" of the character you are hating. I suggest you stop reading the story if you couldn't care less to remember some points from the previous chapters.
Also, Winter obviously has the power to leave and not be acquainted with Ray anymore. He chose to stay; sometimes, it's not the environment to blame—it's the person. It may have some influence but it's for you to decide whether you allow it to affect you more.

Go back and read, what kind of surrounding Winter grew up and what kind of idolize he has on love. He needed serious help and Ray could admit him to hospital but he just drag him to his house and showed lot of rapy and drug things.
He made Winter develop toxic affection towards him and no way in hell he could/would leave Ray. Humans psychology is not that straightforward.
