In the novel, around chapter 170, Jean is "engaged" to Ashe. "Engaged" because it's basically a fake one.
Ashe is asked to return to her country, and they fear she will be forced to marry the second prince (her ex fiance). Both Ashe and Jean don't want that to happen. So the butler asked Jean to become Ashe's fiance. Jean agrees and makes an engagement bracelet for her.
So, it was a fake engagement, but Ashe was practically Jean's girlfriend from then on. Though their relationship was a real slow burn. 600 chapters and they've only gotten to the hugging stage.
