They were like eighteen and in a super dependent relationship and so much shit happened with the father and others nasty characters; I think maybe the gap was large but in the end the decision to wait was wiser bc they not were prepared for that ton of heavy drama. (If you want a spoiler: the Wonie father told the police about the Izakaya working with minors (Hangyun), and they closed it. later, because of that incident, Hangyun needs to go out to the country and start different businesses for economic independence.) Wooni sleeps with one dude, and later, the dude starts stalking him. Hangyun never says anything explicit, but everyone gets the idea.
okay, y'all, I am in the last few chapters of the novel, and the separation is necessary for the kids to chill a little about all the drama.
The happy part is later when they reencounter, they start a frenzy and obsessive relationship, so a happy ending for all.
