Is 778 bad can someone explain to me

I think it's his ranking in the whole school. I might be wrong tho, so if someone knows for sure please correct me

Basically he's in 778th place, out of, let's say 1000 within the school. I believe their agreement was to be within top 500 or something?

I honestly don't remember either someone pls correct me
