Nope. The author clarified it in her twitter post. He actually did hurt himself accidentally. He can do things well once he tries it. Which is why the first time he hurt himself but then he was able to hammer those oins perfectly
but... he hurt himself using a scissor not hammer/nail. it seems deliberate to me. you can see in one pannel in luke's friend POV that the scissor was the one that has blood and not anything about the table which are the only things andrew was using

i get that author wanted to clear up any misunderstanding to the readers but they should've thought it through. if the blood was either seen on the nails or hammer or the project itself, readers wouldn't be so confused

I hate to be that bitch, but a lot of the time, what the author says and how their art is interpreted are two separate things. From the way the story is written we are seeing the incident from the perspective of the blonde guy. And from his perspective, the ML is deliberately hurting himself to get the attention of the MC. As readers, we don’t find this perspective unreasonable based on our knowledge of the ML’s loneliness, trust issues and need for affection.
(Side note - blonde guy is one of those goofy yet genuine side characters that I really love.)
