yes but the whole point of most apocalypse stories is about what we'll be pushed to do under stress or for "survival." characters get into conflict in all of these stories while being stranded or during an apocalypse because people believe they can start deciding who lives and dies when there is no correct answer. sure you might survive longer, but at what cost? katniss and gale are the perfect example of this where sure you might kill some dangerous people by killing everyone, but how can you keep your humanity if you also weigh peoples lives? yes empathy and caring for people can get you killed cause people can take advantage of that, but does that mean we should look passed our empathy and kill people to make our own survival easier? if one person has the 'potential' to be dangerous, does that mean we kill them because it makes it easier for the lives of 100 people? the apocalypse is the only reason they acting like this, but the mc is providing a much needed outside opinion. if teach's family could be saved by him stealing medicine, I think he would have done the same thing even if it meant death. and if guwon was out here saying "you're my one and only" would he also kill the mc if he stole medicine for a child just because he broke the rules? character conflict makes this whole thing interesting, but it also means "survival no matter the cost" isn't everyone's goal and it doesn't make logical characters more right than more empathetic ones

Punishing him okay, killing him in this cult like fashion style is just insane. You can have order without erasing a whole living being for it. Treating other individuals like this with such ease is just begging for the destruction of the human kind. And the male lead is rincing his hands of it by making people vote which is even more despicable, he's overjoyed by his role and it's so not a good thing.
