I agree that it was very cruel, I don’t think it should’ve been a public execution or something that required beating, maybe doing it quick would’ve been better. However this reminds me of Little Mushroom ML. Where the ML there is the executioner. Everyone thinks of that ML as a monster since he mercilessly kills anyone that’s a threat to the citizens.
Don’t forget that this is a zombie apocalypse. Without the ML’s harshness and leading, they ALL would be dead. How do you think they were able to survive and live peacefully within the walls? Cause he likely saved them all and created a community that has everyone contribute and work together. If one person is let go for stealing, other people will think ML is soft and will let them go if they steal too. Then the supplies will be scarce, everyone would be suffering, no more medical supplies, and no one can be saved if injured. Someone has to be the heartless one to keep everyone alive. Kindness in a zombie apocalypse only gets you so far. I hate to say it, but I do understand the ML.
