He is changing, he's discovered he has emotions. He's killed only those that deserve it. Not only that, but he let an entire dungeon of spirits free instead of keeping them captive; he had been thinking of converting them all into the tower until the final boss fight was over. It gave that iconic moment where the Grinch's heart grew. xD
