It's about optics. Once he's branded a sinner, that label cannot just dissappear again. There will always be people who don't care about context and just believe what they hear. He had to redeem him somehow, even if he doesn't believe he did anything wrong.
In the churches eyes especially he shouldn't even be considered a sinner, he killed heretical dragon worshippers who barbarically sacrificed people.
Idk, I find it weird that no one brought up the circumstances of his murders, like I don't believe that these Moruncan people believe every single life is precious to the degree that killing sinners is sinning
