this is more of a guess but author doesn't seem to use irl logic of how it works with animals
Like for dairy cows they make them have babies and immediately separate them, bc they had babies they produce milk. However M has the desired of feed his babies and produces milk in return but he never had babies
So with the chicken it's going by an odd logic too, he doesnt want his "babies" ti be taken away from him even tho those are not actual babies but unfertilized eggs and is not that typical for chickens to guard unfertilized eggs (this as someone who grow up with a few chickens, although I could be wrong)

im so sad for the chicken like idk how eggs go from chicks or just eggs we can eat but those were literally his babies
