As a law student…

Unfortunately, the police is right kwon didn’t physically attack garam so technically garam didn’t fight in self defence, but instead in the heat of passion, or provocation. This isn’t an entirely valid excuse, but it often leads to lessened charges.

Well yeah that s why he said they should reach a settlement between the two most likely he meant both need to drop the charges

i mean he tried to and many people would vouch for that. when two people behave equally unlawfully toward each other, the law disregards them.

yeah he attempted to, but failed, at least in french law, legitimate defense has to be proportional, aka you're not gonna poke the eye out of someone trying to kill you to try and stop him (it sucks, it sucks balls i know)
A normal/good attorney/yourself with a great defense would get you out of this though, i mean they were both being threatened by someone holding a weapon, + he swung it and actually hurt someone, that's not nothing.

irl i've seen a couple accidentally (i mean they were convincing about it) kill a guy who wanted to steal their car and threatened them with a gun, they got away with it, because fucking hell, they were just making out in their car after a party and a random wacko comes to threaten them, the juge said hell no like us.

But, police officers will often push you towards settling or dropping the charges in small offenses like these, you just have to really think about whether you want to go in front of a juge or not, don't let them intimidate you (knowing your rights helps so much, i'm so mad we don't teach a bit of law in high schools, it's like it's intentional.)
