i think her brother made them promise something and were aware of the past because of him -- in a few of their chapters they kinda have flash backs of him and that they owe him or something

No, he just calls the king out on being distant and unloving to Edgar. He brings up how he understands that it’s the emperor’s trauma regarding his family that is probably the cause for the sudden distance. Everything after that talks about the past timeline is the king thinking about why
