It's not redemption but reaffirmation. Khalid really is just a shit person. Estelle trusted him fully and if he just spoke to her she would have listened. He had a lot of time to do it and come up with some plan with her to screw the king over, but chose to keep silent. And then killed her to "keep her a shining star" or whatever.
It would be one thing if he atoned for it, but he betrayed and killed Estelle and got a title for it. He was REWARDED. And he accepted it. He behaves like he did a good thing. That's not the actions of someone atoning.
I think I would have liked him more if he was a straight up villain that killed Estelle because she "outlived her usefulness to him" or something of the sort, but he is just a little bitch who cannot accept the fact that he betrayed his most important person in the worst way possible. And still has the gall to ask her to love him.
