Even though the plot is predictable if you read a lot of dark romances, this particular story is still complex on multiple levels as it highlights a frequently overlooked personality type in these kinds of scenarios: “The Watcher.” At first glance, most people would say that Fuku is the most dangerous kind of person to have in your life, but after deeper introspection, I would personally say that people like Riku are just as terrifying. Maybe even worse to some extent. Fuku’s personality is a bad one, perhaps evil even, but measures can be taken to avoid being fooled a second time once you’ve seen them for what they are. A venomous snake you can always trust to be a venomous snake. Once revealed, they don’t change. You can continue to associate with them or stay with them after their “apologies” but they will continue snake behavior and forever be that snake. You cannot change them. People like Riku, however, find it all amusing. They like to watch. Watchers like Riku will spot the venomous snake and watch it crawl into their fellow camper’s shoe, and not say a word unless it intrigues them to do so. These are the scariest people to have in your life. They exist around you, knowing everything about your current situation or at least much more than you do, but instead of giving you warnings or coming to you about anything, they keep it to themselves while your life descends into chaos. They wait until you’re already half paralyzed from the snake’s bite to let you know that they had seen it slithering long before. They find the snake entertaining to watch, and convince themselves that as long as they themselves don’t participate in the snake’s deeds, then they are still somehow on higher moral ground. Watchers are terrifying in the sense that it’s hard to tell who they are or what and how much they know and see about you and your snake, unless they tell you. And they’re usually close people. Coworkers, siblings, parents…it’s the same vibe of having that one relative who knows about the creepy uncle’s habits and intentions, but doesn’t bother to speak up or protect any of the young ones until damage has been done. Again, personal opinion, but I find these types way scarier and unpredictable than straight up psychos, because again, often harder to identify and avoid. Overall this was an interesting story. Made me ponder way more than I had intended today, so there’s that. lol
