Idk, I feel like it sorts of undermines the story if a duty is something that naturally fades away. It drove that blonde knight crazy and it made the princess understand and forgive mc. Plus this just makes it obvious that the empress isn't out of danger yet, there are still people trying to use her.
I understand that for the romantic development it's better to have her focus on someone other than the empress, but that was her most charming trait. I feel like they could've made the romance work despite mc being completely devoted to the empress
