Another thing I think Shima should get praise for is how kind he is to his brother. It should be a given, but imagine having such a terrible childhood and watching the culprit get a second chance with another kid who they pamper and give the perfect upbringing. I understand why he felt so removed from the household, that is so devastating to witness. It reminds me of the mother from The Good Place - so you had it in you this whole time? Just not with me? I might sound horrible for this, but I don't think I would have had the same grace in his position. I might have grown to hate my sibling because of it, which I understand is not fair at all

Obviously it's very complex. Being a parent is NOT easy and you have to improvise so many challenges. Clearly his mother had no support herself and I can empathise with her but that js so much damage that cannot be undone. I'm glad both are trying to improve in their own ways. But yes it's just so painful and she should bear that burden.

And at least the stepfather is a kind man. Imagine how much worse this all would have been if he wasn't accepting of Shima. Obviously they're not close but there are people in real life who will psychologically torment their step children.
