In many cultures around the world, it's typical to call a person similar in age to you who's close to the family but not related as "brother/sister". No, they aren't related by blood, it's just a cultural thing. It isn't limited to just those titles, many cultures promote calling close family friends "aunt/uncle" or "cousin", too. I had many "aunts/uncles" growing up that weren't related to me.
Now I'm confused. Lady estyria keep calling ml brother so they're related ?
