I'm beggininh to think that the Erne wasn't really a halfwit and the sacrifice is part of her guilt to give her sister a better life, develop a relationship with her grandmother, have a better relationship with her father, become a real noble lady with a good reputation and marry the best man she could find. I feel like the Eri dismisses the guilt Erne felt because she doesn't know the truth (that she's actually Kanae) but the guilt and her terrible life might have been eating away at her more than we realize.
