From what I grasped, the special unit of hardcore strong people was formed to tackle incredible battles and tasks and then for some reason they were ordered to be eliminated (no reason was given so far but I guess cos they too strong and scary). K and some other dudes survived that elimination and fled. But also, K knew about elimination (presumed) and is hinted to be the one to proceed with this task. Also he kinda shielded himself with his former poison partner so our man REALLY wanted to survive. So far this is all I understood ahaha sekusi time is more entertaining tbh
