no ur literally like cos i took gene leaving trevor as what couples irl who breakup to pursue their dreams like it DOES happen. people leave their partners because they dream of a life bigger that what they have, and sometimes, when u obsess over a goal u get lost in them. u focus so much on a single thing u cant afford to be affected by things outside of urself and thats exactly what happened to trevor and gene.
and i think gene ultimately felt like he had to regain a sense of himself again without being tied down to a place or a person. he was young, he had been w the amish since he was a kid and him running away was the first time he got to fully live. and i think trevor also understood that thats why he didnt want to tie down gene to him.
idk why people r having a hard time understanding this.
yeah it's SO common for couples to breakup over different goals people will ask for realistic love stories all the time but then they will also expect it to be perfect when that's not realistic at all like... make it make sense dude

Him returning home would have destroyed his character and development. He left his love just to what? go back to what he initially escaped from? (╯°Д °)╯╧╧
And yes this was a realistic love story and I think that’s what made the story even more beautiful and made me cry my heart out. so much years apart… He even returned to the US and never went back （/TДT) But yes this was a Queer story and as Trevor said the times were different back then and long distance communication wasn’t what it’s like now. I’m just glad they found their way back to each other again ヾ(❀╹◡╹)ﾉ~
I'd love to give this more updates tbh. You articulated the message of gene's story and their relationship very well.
I really don't understand how people can think gene going back to his family was a better ending. Yes his mother told him he could come back but do you really understand what would it mean? like, you don't get it, its not like he could've come back and then leave again when he wanted to, so he could follow his dreams, if he came back he would've had to stay there forever again and that absolutely would've made him miserable. He took the decision to leave the person he loved the most in the world in order to follow his dreams, thats how much he wanted to achieve his goals in life, so how can you think he would've been happier if he went back? You don't understand his character at all.
And also, I know its hard to understand and you think "why did they just stop talking to each other all those years?" because I do too, but what you have to understand is that Trevor thought of himself as something that was keeping Gene away from being the most and best he could, and I suppose he thought him contacting Gene would be "egoist" because Gene would've came back to him again and stop following his dreams. and In Gene's pov I guess he thought the same, that Trevor was going to be okay without him because as you can see, they just assumed that the other would find someone else to keep them company (as in a lover,friend or family)
This is not as weird or stupid as u think, and its something that happens in real life a lot too, much more that you may think. There's many old people who have lots of stories about how they just had to let people go, some of them never saw each other again, its common dude I don't understand why you all act as if it's not. And it can happen to people for countless reasons, In this case, I think both of them just thought it was the best to let go and keep going with their own life. And also, Its one of those type of situations where both of them thought "If he wanted me back he would reach for me" but since none of them did, they thought it was over. miscommunications this big are SO common you have no idea.
And lastly, I really do think you all are forgetting that this is a queer love story, Its not directly shown in the manga but I think it was so obvious too that Trevor just accepted he was going to be "alone" in life, but deep inside maybe he wanted Gene to have a chance to meet more people, maybe specifically a woman, who could've gave Gene a "true" family. Maybe you all just need to read way more angst to understand this manga. even after all these years, they ended up together dude, that's the WHOLE POINT.
