I don't want to think like this, but...

I'm sorry, but this attitude I can't support. He needs to work on his issues, and Satoko deserves a peaceful life, at least until she dies. If peace means her to be with this other guy (I keep forgetting his name) then she should go ahead...

I don’t disagree with ops sentiments but I also think readers are overlooking the unfathomable trauma shinpei has experienced from a young age because the author did a bad job of exploring it in a realistic way, making him sort of this manic pixie yandere. I also like Mitsuhara aside from the rampant benevolent sexism.

Shinpei killed a man as a little boy because he was attacking his mother or something like that (I don’t remember it well). He was extremely impoverished and then left alone as a child with no caretaker after her death. Most kids in that period died without parents. He found a way to survive by killing people. You don’t have to understand child psychology to know that things like poverty and death mess a child up. He has a lot of issues mentally and has no tools for dealing with them. A person like him doesn’t just magically get better because he falls in love. He likes Satoko because she is the closest he’s felt to a semblance of normalcy, safety, and selfless compassion since he was a child. The only people he’s been around are crooks and prostitutes, all people from poverty trying to survive and having to do things that deeply damage them physically and mentally to survive. Manipulating their friends and foes alike. People that play even the people they’re close to because that’s how their world works. They’re exploited by those above them and then exploit each other. Never feeling safe or learning much about the world outside of their bubble. Satoko is very appealing because she has the kind of empathetic behavior only the wealthy can afford and that comes from her comfortable privileged life where she never had to worry about her next meal. That doesn’t mean her life was easy and that she didn’t experience illness and abuse, but it’s different.

Shinpei never did things because he thought they were right. He did it because she told him to and he was trying to be liked. He thought “if I do what she wants, we can be together”. Then the father’s actions made him realize that was not enough and he’s realizing it is not that simple and the power others have versus his own (violence). He’s a violent man with the mind of an emotionally stunted child doing the only thing he’s ever known to handle problems. It was never going to be easy and they’re both coming to that realization now because things are getting tough.

Tldr Shinpei is a more nuanced character but the author has done a bad job of making him feel like a real person with real severe mental health issues because he’s kind of reduced to just a manic pixie yandere type male lead so girls can project and fantasize about a man being obsessed with them (because of women’s own trauma from the patriarchy causing this trope for wishfulfilment; man change bc he like you so much nobody else matters to him)

    COOKINGGGG
I also agree that the author can't really write nuanced characters like shinpei. Like there's an attempt but it's not a good attempt
