Anyways, for the story, this sound like a chinese webtoon (manhua) kind of plot.
Maybe it should be in the epilogue, but rather than the climax of the story. Also, maybe the MC has new partner before seeing the ML and there is a revenge plot.

So if anyone is a fanfic writer or what, I have this idea where you write a bl with a concept of nemesis to friends to lovers...but hey here's the twist, before ending the story in which our couple is so happy.. really happy no one would thought that something will happen... For the last chapter before the epilogue, you make the ml go into a incident..your choice of incident making believe the reader's the ml died... So in epilogue, time passes by years or maybe even a decade, the mc is reminiscing about the ml still at their favorite public place only for him to see a familiar build, face, and voice... there in front of him,.the 'dead' lover happily laughing with his daughter in his arms and a beautiful woman beside him.
Maybe the ml lived after the incident, let's make the parents dislike the idea of them being together and they lied to the mc being the ml dead... y'know they got power(money and such)
